[Universiade 2015] Host S. Korea Ranks 1st in Medal Standings

Anchor: The 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade has wrapped up its 12-day run on Tuesday with a closing ceremony. Host South Korea ranked number one in the overall medal standings after grabbing 47 gold medals. It marks the first time South Korea has topped the international summer sports event.

Report: The 2015 Gwangju Summer Universiade wrapped up its final event on Tuesday.
 
Some 13-thousand young athletes from 146 countries vied for 272 gold medals in the largest Universiade games ever. 
 
With athletes grabbing gold medals until the last days of the event, South Korea ranked number one for the first time in a Summer Universiade, beating its own goal of winning 25 gold. 
 
South Korea took home 47 gold, 32 silver and 29 bronze for a total of 108 medals.
 
Rhythmic gymnast Son Yeon-jae won a total of five medals during the games. She secured three gold medals from individual all-around rhythmic gymnastics, the hoops finals and the ball finals and grabbed silver in ribbon and clubs. 
 
South Korea was also a standout in taekwondo, grabbing eight gold medals. 
 
Among the foreign athletes who drew attention was Belgian decathlete Thomas van der Plaetsen who took the gold medal in the men’s decathlon. He had also taken gold at the 2013 Summer Universiade before being diagnosed and undergoing treatment for testicular cancer in 2014.
 
The United States, meanwhile, grabbed gold in both men’s and women’s basketball. The men’s team was made up of players from the University of Kansas Jayhawks, one of the oldest and most successful university basketball programs in history.
  
Russia, which took home the most medals at the previous Universiade, came in second with 34 gold and 122 medals in total. China came third, matching Russia in gold medals but trailing in silver and bronze. Japan and the United States rounded out the top five.
