Choi Woon-jeong has won her first LPGA victory after besting fellow South Korean Jang Ha-na in a playoff at the Marathon Classic in Sylvania, Ohio, on Sunday.
Choi, who goes by the first name Chella on the LPGA, recorded five birdies without a bogey in the fourth round at Highland Meadows Golf Club, forcing the playoff with LPGA rookie Jang at 14 under par.
Jang settled for a bogey on the first playoff hole, handing a victory to the seven-year veteran Choi, who sank a par.
Hoisting a trophy for the first time in her 157 LPGA entries since making her debut on the U.S. circuit in 2009, the 24-year-old Choi has also walked away with 250-thousand U.S dollars in prize money.
With Choi’s victory, South Koreans, excluding foreign nationals of Korean heritage, have won 11 times on the LPGA this year, tying the record of most South Korean wins in 2006 and 2009.
