June Tourism Drops 41% Amid MERS Outbreak

The number of tourists visiting South Korea fell by more than 40 percent last month due to the outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The Korea Tourism Organization said Tuesday that around 750-thousand tourists visited the nation in June, down 41 percent on year.

By nationality, the number of Chinese tourists fell by 45 percent to about 315-thousand while the number of Japanese tourists fell 42 percent to roughly 100-thousand.

Meanwhile, the number of South Koreans who traveled abroad last month rose eight percent from a year ago to about one-point-three-million as the MERS outbreak didn't have a significant impact on overseas travel for South Koreans.

The nation reported no additional MERS infections for a 16th consecutive day on Tuesday, leaving the number of confirmed cases at 186. A total of 14 people are still receiving treatment with four said to be in unstable condition.
