Former FIFA Vice President Chung Mong-joon plans to officially announce in Europe next month his plan to run for the presidency of the international football governing body.
Chung, who is also the honorary president of the Korea Football Association, told reporters at Incheon International Airport on Thursday that though it will not be easy to be elected, he believes it’s worth the challenge.
The election for FIFA’s presidency is set to be held in February next year.
Chung, Hyundai Heavy Industries' largest shareholder, said given that the World Cup games have been held outside of Europe, he believes it’s now desirable for a non-European to head the organization.
Chung said current FIFA chief, Sepp Blatter, should resign and the upcoming election should be managed fairly by an interim body. He stressed integrity as the top virtue that must be held by the head of FIFA.
The seven-term lawmaker will depart for the U.S. on Thursday and watch matches of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football Gold Cup and seek to secure support from football officials of North and Central America in his bid for the FIFA presidency.
