In Beijing, the government is trying desperately to contain outbreaks of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome by sealing off a hospital and closing schools. Beijing University closed its People's Hospital on Thursday. Some two thousand patients and health workers in the hospital have been transferred to other hospitals in the capital city for tests. City authorities have also shut down schools for two weeks starting Thursday. Thousands of Beijing citizens are swarming into railway stations and airports to escape the SARS scare. In addition, people are flocking to shopping malls and super markets to stock up on agricultural products and daily necessities. Such disorder was sparked by a rumor that Beijing would be quarantined and that trains services to Beijing may be suspended beginning Friday. The death toll from the deadly virus stands at 106 in China and some 2400 infections have been reported. In Beijing alone, 39 have died from the atypical illness and more than 770 have contracted it.
