Mural Tomb of Gaya Kingdom to be Closed for Preservation

The Cultural Heritage Administration will close the ancient Goari mural tomb in Goryeong, North Gyeongsang Province, which is the only mural tomb of the Gaya Kingdom.

The mural tomb was created at the end of the Great Gaya Kingdom around the middle of the sixth century. It was first discovered in 1963 and has been repaired five times since. However, the tomb has continuously suffered damage due to worsened preservation conditions.

The cultural agency said the tomb has seen serious damage to its inner walls, ceiling and murals in particular. It said that in order to prevent further damage, it will close the tomb after carrying out work to reinforce the inner structure.

Though the actual tomb will be closed, a model of the tomb will be built in a nearby pavilion.
