The county of Geumsan in South Chungcheong Province will launch efforts to have its ginseng farming registered on the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS).
A county official said Thursday that the listing is intended to shed light on the agricultural value of Geumsan's ginseng, preserve the industry and obtain global recognition of its historical legitimacy.
The move comes after Geumsan ginseng acquired nationally important agricultural heritage designation this past April.
The GIAHS has been implemented by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization since 2002 with the aim of preserving regions rich in traditional agriculture and related cultures, outstanding landscapes and biodiversity for future generations .
China's traditional tea agriculture and farming methods in Japan using the crested ibis are added to the GIAHS list. South Korea's field irrigation system called "gudeuljangnon" in Cheongsan Island, South Jeolla Province made it on the list in April last year.
