Teen Diver Wins 1st N. Korean Gold at World Aquatics Championships

North Korea has won its first-ever gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships.

Sixteen-year-old Kim Kuk-hyang won the women’s 10-meter platform diving at the aquatic world championships in Kazan on Thursday, beating out her Chinese rival Ren Qian.

Kim earned 397-point-05 points while Ren came in with 388 points.

Kim entered the fifth and final round in fourth place, but came from behind with a stunning performance that drew a perfect score of ten from two of the seven judges.

It was the first time a North Korean athlete has stood atop the podium at the aquatic world championships since the biennial event began in 1973.
