Hyundai Asan to Send 22-member Delegation to Memorial Service in N. Korea

Seoul has approved a request by Hyundai Asan to send a delegation to a memorial event set to be held in North Korea for its late business leader Chung Mong-hun.

The Unification Ministry said Monday that it approved the request by the operator of the suspended inter-Korean tours to Mount Geumgang in North Korea.

The ministry said it allowed the trip after taking into account that the memorial service has been held every year.

Including the president of Hyundai Asan, a total 22 South Koreans will visit the scenic mountain resort to attend a memorial service marking the 12th anniversary of the death of former Hyundai Group Chairman Chung Mong-hun. Widowed Hyundai Group Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun will not join the trip.

After attending the memorial service, the group plans to inspect facilities for Mount Geumgang tours, which have been suspended for more than seven years since the shooting death of a South Korean tourist in the North Korean resort.

The group will travel to the North via the inter-Korean transit office in Gangwon Province around 9:20 a.m. Tuesday and return home around four p.m.
