Institutes of Historical Studies Urge Japan to Address its Past

A council comprising 20 South Korean institutes of historical studies has urged the Japanese government to swiftly resolve the matter of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery and other historical issues.

In a statement released Wednesday, the council called on the Japanese government to abandon its attitude of denying history, including its wartime sexual enslavement of women.

The council then urged Tokyo to clearly declare its intention to uphold the apologetic Kono and Murayama statements.

The council said during wartime, the Japanese government mobilized women as sex slaves and made them subjects of repeated sexual violence.

The council claimed that the Japanese government must no longer deny or distort the truth and must immediately provide compensation and sincere apologies to victims.
