South Korean high school history textbooks will include more detailed explanations about Japan's wartime sex slavery starting from academic year 2018.
A history curricula research team held a public hearing at Seoul National University on Saturday and presented a draft proposal on textbook revisions that include major topics in Korean history under 27 sub-themes categorized according to a timeline.
For instance, under the sub-theme "Changes in the Modern World," the so-called China's Northeast Asian project, through which China attempts to distort ancient Korean history, and Japan's wartime sex slavery are included as key study topics.
The proposed draft calls for equipping students to logically refute Japan's claims by studying the wartime and territorial issues and historical conflicts through concrete examples.
Until now, there was no direct mention of sex slavery in guidelines for writing South Korean history textbooks.
The research team expects that if the sex slavery issue is included as a key study topic, more related content will appear in future texts.
The Education Ministry will gather opinions from the hearing and finalize a revised curriculum next month.
