An ancient vessel found in the Yellow Sea off Taean, South Chungcheong Province last year has been confirmed as a grain carrier from the Joseon Dynasty.

The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage said Wednesday that about 300 relics were discovered from the shipwreck, including 140 pieces of Buncheong celadon, or grayish-blue-powdered celadon from the Joseon Dynasty, and about 60 wooden tablets.

The Buncheong celadon are presumed to be from the early 14th century in the early age of the Joseon Dynasty given an inscription carved on the porcelain implying the name of a government office under King Taejong.

Investigation and excavation are under way on the 13-meter-long, five-meter-wide wooden ship, which was found near Mado Island in November last year. Earlier, three vessels from the Goryeo Kingdom were found in the same area.
