Balhae Kingdom Fortress Found in Russian Far East

A bastion from Korea's Balhae kingdom has been found in Primorsky Krai in the Russian Far East.

The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage on Wednesday said that excavations carried out between July and August uncovered relics of the seventh to tenth century kingdom.

In a joint project with Russia’s Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Peoples of the Far East under the Russian Academy of Sciences, remains of a stone wall were found along with building sites.

The South Korean institute said with the latest discovery, it has been confirmed that Balhae subjugated the indigenous Malgal tribe and built fortresses that are distinguishable from the Malgal style.

The institute plans to release a comprehensive report after carrying out another round of excavations next year.
