Gov't: Unification Ministry Saw Hundreds of Hacking Attempts Every Year

Attempts to hack into the Unification Ministry and affiliated agencies were found to amount to hundreds every year.
 
According to a report that the Unification Ministry submitted to the office of main opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy lawmaker Kim Sung-gon, there were a total of 946 attempts to hack into the Unification Ministry and affiliated organizations between 2011 and July of this year.
 
Out of that total, 519 attempts were made through China, 192 through South Korea, 84 via the U.S. and 27 through Hong Kong.
 
The report said that last year saw the largest number of attempts at 315. In 2012, the figure stood at 278 and in 2013, 161.
 
More than 43 percent of incidents, or 410, were attempts to collect system data while 260 attempts were made through hacking mail and 216 through malware distribution.
 
The Unification Ministry said it has not faced any damage from the hacking attempts.
