French Writer: Hangeul Can Play Key Role in Protecting Minority Languages

Renowned French writer and Nobel Prize laureate Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio said Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, can play a significant role in protecting minority languages.

Le Clézio made the remark on Wednesday when he gave a special lecture at the International Congress of Writers Writing in Korean in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.

The French writer called Hangeul remarkable, adding that it is easy to learn and was invented to help with quick learning.

He said minority languages that are only spoken and not written must be recorded in order to be preserved. Le Clézio said as all minority languages can be written in Hangeul, education of the Korean writing system clearly holds global significance.

Debuting in 1963 with the novel, "The Interrogation," Le Clézio won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2008.
