Gov't to Directly Crack down on Violations of Newspaper Regulations

Written: 2003-05-03 00:00:00Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

The government will intervene directly to clamp down on unfair practices by newspaper companies.

The Regulatory Reform Committee endorsed Friday the revisions to regulations on newspaper circulation and sales practices worked out by the Fair Trade Commission.

The new rules will empower the government to crack down on "illegal" practices like distributing newspapers for free to drive out competitors and offering expensive gifts to boost subscription.

The revised regulations will take effect in the middle of this month.
