Korean Empire Envoy Meetings to be Reenacted at Deoksu Palace

An ancient royal ritual will be reenacted at downtown Deoksu Palace this month.

Emperor Gojong’s process for receiving foreign envoys visiting the Korean Empire will be reconstructed at the palace every Saturday and Sunday between October 3 and 18 as well as on Friday October 9, which is Hangeul or Korean Alphabet Day.

The reenactment will take the form of a play portraying how the emperor met with envoys from the U.S., France and Britain. Students from Hansung Foreign Language School, an institution founded by Emperor Gojong with an emphasis on foreign language education, will take part in the reenactment as observers.

The play will also include scenes following the meetings with the envoys where foreign and Korean officials enjoyed a banquet amid a Western style military band performance which was popular at the time.
