Photo of King Gojong's Portrait Found in US

A photograph of King Gojong’s portrait taken by a Korean has been found in the United States.

The Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation said on Monday that it found the photo taken by Kim Gyu-jin, a Korean photographer in the early 20th century, while conducting a survey on Korean cultural assets housed at the Newark Museum in New Jersey.

The photo, which has the time, location and the name of the photographer inscribed, was reportedly bestowed upon a U.S. diplomatic delegation in 1905 by King Gojong as a token of diplomatic friendship between Korea and the U.S.

The foundation said that the photo has a high historic value as it is rare for a photograph of King Gojong to have details of the photo shoot. The foundation also noted it is one of few photographs left by the photographer.
