Gov't, Saenuri Agree on State-Designated Textbooks

The government and the ruling party have decided to pursue having schools use state-designated Korean history textbooks amid concerns that some of the current textbooks are ideologically prejudiced.

An official of the ruling camp said that the government and the Saenuri Party agreed through behind-the-scenes contacts that standardization is the best way to turn the history textbooks back to normal.

The official said that as long as history textbook writers are biased, controversy surrounding fairness cannot be resolved no matter how much screening procedures are strengthened.

The official said it is highly likely that the president would approve the agreement to standardize textbooks.

The government is expected to unveil measures on pursuing state-designated history textbooks next week.
