Top Office Determined to Standardize History Textbooks

The presidential office has expressed its firm resolve to implement state-designated Korean history textbooks, arguing the country needs to develop books that are well-balanced.

A top office official made the remark on Wednesday, saying President Park Geun-hye openly expressed concern last year about the overall and general problems facing Korean history education.

When the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism presented annual plans in February last year, Park said textbooks that received government endorsements had many factual errors and raised controversies surrounding ideological biases.

At the time, Park also urged the Education Ministry to come up with measures, such as developing balanced and factual history textbooks, to prevent a recurrence of such problems.
