A new survey finds that about seven out of ten people prefer "Hunminjeongeum," the original manuscript of the Korean alphabet Hangeul, over Sungnyemun Gate as the nation’s number one national treasure.
According to pollster Real Meter on Wednesday, a little over 64 percent of one-thousand people age 19 or older said they prefer the designation of Hunminjeongeum as national treasure number one. Only 20 percent selected Sungnyemun Gate, also known as the Namdaemun Gate.
The pollster carried out the survey at the request of two civic groups that work to protect Korean cultural assets, including the Committee for the Return of Cultural Property.
The two groups unveiled the results of the latest survey in front of the statue of King Sejong the Great at Gwanghwamun Square on Wednesday and revealed a petition calling for the designation of the Hangeul manuscript, currently number 70, to become the number one national treasure.
The groups held a signature-collecting campaign between last November and January this year for the designation.
