A set of Confucian printing woodblocks from Korea were inscribed on the UNESCO Memory of the World documentary heritage list on Friday.
The International Advisory Committee of the UNESCO Memory of the World held its 12th session in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, from Sunday to Tuesday and recommended the listing of the Korean heritage item. The decision was made final upon approval of UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova.
The woodblocks comprise 64-thousand-226 pages of 718 books written by Confucian scholars during the Joseon Dynasty. The books include collections of work by Confucian scholars, books on Neo-Confucianism, family genealogies and chronologies.
The Memory of the World program, established by UNESCO in 1992, seeks to protect globally valuable documents that have had major influence on world history and culture or serve to reflect or provide understanding of a certain historical period.
