South Korea has deposited the instrument of ratification for the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired, or Otherwise Print Disabled.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said South Korea made the move at the 55th General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva. South Korea is the eleventh country to adopt the treaty.

The treaty requires countries which ratify the accord to have an exception to domestic copyright law for visually impaired and print-disabled people, allowing the creation of accessible format books without the need to ask permission from the copyright holder.

Some 80 countries have expressed willingness to take part in the treaty. The treaty is set to go into effect in the first half of next year.
