Swiss Court Rejects Chung Mong-Joon's Request to Lift FIFA Ban

A Swiss court has rejected Chung Mong-joon’s request to temporarily lift his ban from FIFA, eroding hope that he will run for president of football’s world governing body.

According to FIFA on Tuesday, a Zurich District Court dismissed Chung’s request to lift a six-year ban that FIFA placed on him on October 8, saying the FIFA ethics committee’s decision did not have a procedural defection nor breached the rights of an individual.

It has dealt a blow to the South Korean’s bid to replace FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who is mired in corruption scandals. Chung can still appeal the decision, but the deadline for candidacy registration is October 26.

Meanwhile, FIFA’s executive committee has reaffirmed that an extraordinary congress to elect a new FIFA president will be held on February 26.
