Written: 2003-05-07 00:00:00Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

Senior military commanders met to review the Defense Ministry's plan to boost the nation's self-defense capabilities.

Defense Minister Cho Young-kil explained the "new self-defense vision" which he had reported to President Roh Moo-hyun on Tuesday.

The plans call for strengthening intelligence gathering capabilities for which Seoul currently relies heavily on the United States, and forging a new military alliance with the United States based on the results of bilateral military talks held last month.

The military also plans to improve the military judicial system, raise the salaries of enlisted men and provide more jobs for retired officers.
