The Unification Ministry said Friday that it approved a visit to an ancient palace site in the North Korean border city of Gaeseong by lawmakers from the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee.
 
A group of 58 members of the foreign affairs committee headed by Rep. Na Kyung-won will visit the border city on Monday to look around a joint excavation site at Manwoldae and a display of uncovered relics.
 
The scheduled visit will be the first in two years. The last trip by the lawmakers from the Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee was to the Gaeseong Industrial Complex in 2013.
 
Members sought to visit the North to inspect the Gaeseong complex during parliamentary inquiries last month but the trip did not materialize.
 
Manwoldae is the site where Goryeo Dynasty founder King Taejo built his palace. The two Koreas have been conducting joint excavations at the site since 2007.
