Gov't Announces 2 of 6 Writers for Standard Textbooks

The National Institute of Korean History (NIKH) has announced two of the six main authors who will draft standardized Korean history textbooks for secondary students.

In a news conference on Wednesday, the institute under the Education Ministry said that emeritus professor Choi Mong-ryong of Seoul National University and emeritus professor Shin Hyung-sik of Ewha Womans University will each take charge of the early ancient and ancient Korean history sections of the envisioned books.

Choi, who served as head of the Korean Ancient Historical Society, was previously involved in drafting history textbooks for high school students between 1998 and 2011.

Shin, a member of the NIKH between 1994 and 2003, worked previously as the head of the Korean Association for Ancient Studies.

Announcing the names of the two scholars, NIKH chief Kim Jung-bae said his agency will continue to search for leading historians and scholars as well as incumbent teachers to form a six-member author group by mid-November.
