History scholars opposed to the government's plan to issue state-authored history textbooks have announced that they will publish an alternative textbook.

The Korean History Research Association, the nation's largest association of history scholars, said Friday that it has launched a discussion to develop an alternative Korean history textbook.

The association said it has composed a planning committee of some ten incumbent professors to issue an alternative textbook that depicts the conventional views of academia as well as the majority opinion and may be easily understood by high school students and the general public.

It said about 50 to 60 professors will participate in writing the book.
