Seoul City to Transform Phone Booths into Safety Shelters

The Seoul Metropolitan Government will transform telephone booths, now seldom used, into "safety booths" where citizens can take shelter during times of imminent danger.

When a person enters the security booth, the door will automatically shut and a siren will sound to request help. Security camera recording is also possible which is expected to assist in catching criminals.

A cash machine and a touch screen with Internet connection will also be installed inside the booth.

The Seoul city government has designated a phone booth just outside Pungmoon Girls' High School in the Bukchon Hanok Village area as the first of the safety booths.

Some 50 of them will be designated throughout the city by the year's end.
