VOA Highlights Increasing Votes for UN Resolution on N. Korea

The Voice of America (VOA) Wednesday highlighted that an increasing number of countries are sponsoring a United Nations resolution on North Korean human rights violation.

The VOA said that 84 countries voted for a North Korean human rights resolution at the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee in 2005, the first year such a resolution was introduced, with the number of the votes in favor rising to 100 in 2010 to 112 in 2011.

VOA said although a new resolution containing tougher language and seeking stronger punishment was introduced last year, 111 countries still voted for it at the Third Committee. It said five more countries voted for its passage at the UN General Assembly.

The 2014 resolution calls for referring North Korea to the International Criminal Court for human rights violations.

Next week, the UN Third Committee is scheduled to vote on a new North Korean human rights resolution, which is similar to last year’s.
