New KBS President Ko Dae-young Takes Office

The new president of the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) has called for the reform of the public broadcaster.

In his inauguration ceremony Tuesday, President Ko Dae-young said KBS is facing a crisis of survival with a steady decrease in profit. He said the company has failed to achieve its goals of promoting social integration and offering balanced views on social issues.

Ko stressed KBS should depart from everything familiar and implement reforms to overcome the crisis.

To make the broadcaster more competitive, Ko plans to overhaul it into an efficient, functional organization centered on customers and the market.

He also said he will devise new production guidelines that enable KBS to create impartial, objective programs.

Ko will serve as KBS president for three years until November 2018.
