Royal Antiquities, Historical Document Candidates for Application to UNESCO List

Royal antiquities of the Joseon Dynasty and a historic document have been selected as candidates for application to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

The Cultural Heritage Administration said on Wednesday that among 13 items, the cultural properties committee selected a royal seal and a royal book as well as a document on the 1907 National Debt Repayment Movement as possible candidates for application to the UNESCO list.

The royal antiquities are comprised of a ceremonial seal and book, which were created when kings, queens, princes or crown princess of the Joseon Dynasty were named or passed away.

The document from the last days of the Korean Empire contains records regarding the national campaign organized in 1907 to repay the country’s debt through the collecting of individual donations.
