Report: The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) is opening an academy at the Zaatari refugee camp in Jordan.
A group of Taekwondo masters left for Jordan on Friday to prepare for the camp. They’ll give a Taekwondo demonstration at the opening ceremony, which Federation President Choue Chung-won will attend.
During the opening ceremony, the WTF will donate 300 Taekwondo uniforms, 300 T-Shirts and backpacks kids in the camp.
After the performance, Master Hong Si-young will stay at the camp for two months and teach the children with the help of other masters in the region. The four local masters, selected out of 20 applicants, will also help Hong communicate with students.
The WTF Taekwondo Academy in Jordan is a pilot project ahead of the launch of the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, which will carry out a variety of humanitarian projects for refugee children.
This is the first time any international sports governing body established a foundation to implement humanitarian projects for refugee camps.
WTF President Cho announced a plan to establish the foundation in September, as he was attending the 2015 UN International Day of Peace event at UN headquarters in New York.
The WTF said based on the spirit of Taekwondo, it will try to teach the kids the value of discipline and give them the skills to plan their futures by the time they leave the camp.
