Ticket sales for South Korean films have cleared the 100-million mark for the fourth year in a row.
According to the Korean Film Council, the number of moviegoers stood at 100 million, 628-thousand-268 (100,628,268) as of 12 a.m. Monday, topping the landmark figure for the fourth straight year.
Ticket sales for South Korean movies exceeded the 100-million mark for the first time in 2012. The latest figure means that, on average, one person watched two South Korean flicks, considering the nation’s population of 50 million.
Currently, ticket sales are estimated to stand at around 784-and-a-half billion won and the number of new movie releases grew to 229 from 217 last year.
The total number of people who went to watch movies, both domestic and foreign , in South Korea this year currently stands at around 198 million. As a result, the figure is highly likely to exceed 200 million for the third consecutive year.
