Korea's traditional game of "juldarigi" has been added to the UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Seoul's Cultural Heritage Administration said Wednesday that the tug-of-war game made the UN cultural authority's list.
The decision was made during the 10th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Windhoek, Namibia.
South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines submitted their intergovernmental joint application for the recognition in 2013.
Juldarigi is a folk game where two groups pull from either side of a thick rope to bring a mark placed in the middle closer to them.
The game is widely played in Korea and other rice farming countries in Asia in distinct variations.
The cultural heritage administration said UNESCO recognized that through the games, people are wishing for a good harvest and promoting community harmony.
With the latest recognition, South Korea has a total of 18 items in the intangible cultural heritage list by the world cultural and education body, including Kimjang, the making and sharing of kimchi, as well as the folk song, Arirang, and the musical storytelling of Pansori.
