Anchor: An anonymous benefactor has made a fourth large-scale donation to the Daegu Community Chest this holiday season. The mysterious philanthropist, known as Daddy-Long-Legs, asked only that the money be used to help those in need.
Our Bae Joo-yon has more on this heart-warming story.
Report: On Wednesday, the Daegu Community Chest received a phone call at around four p.m. The caller said that he would like to make a contribution and asked that an agency official meet him at a nearby restaurant.
Kim Mi-jung, who handles donation affairs, intuitively sensed that the caller was the anonymous donor who had made three contributions worth more than 100 million won since 2012 and who the community calls “Daddy-Long-Legs.”
The name is apparently based on an American novel of the same name in which a young girl writes letters to a benefactor she has never seen.
When Kim went to the nearby restaurant, a man in his 60s rushed toward her and handed over an envelope, telling her to accept it.
In the envelope was a check for some 120 million won and a note expressing hope that the money will be used to help those most in need.
The community chest staff believes that Daddy-Long-Legs makes the donations with his savings and not with disposable funds.
Daddy-Long-Legs made his first anonymous donation of some 100 million won when he visited the Daegu Community Chest in January 2012. In December of that same year, he donated 123 million won. In December 2013, he again gave around 124 million won.
The total amount of donations from Daddy-Long-Legs stands at around 596 million won.
The secretary-general of the Daegu Community Chest, Park Yong-hoon, said the community is deeply grateful to Daddy-Long-Legs. Park added that the donations will be delivered to marginalized people to help them realize their hopes and dreams.
The Daegu Community Chest began collecting donations on November 23rd. It will run the donation campaign until January 31st with the aim of collecting six-point-95 billion won. So far, the organization has gathered nearly two-point-eight billion.
