S. Korea Bans Champion Weightlifter Sa Jae-hyouk for 10 Years

South Korea banned Olympic weightlifting champion Sa Jae-hyouk from competition for ten years for punching a fellow athlete.

The Korea Weightlifting Federation on Monday approved the ban in a seven-zero vote, with seven of the eight in-house panel members present.

The vote can be reviewed if the 2008 gold medalist and the victim Hwang Woo-man request one in the next two weeks. The vote is otherwise considered binding.

Sa allegedly punched junior weightlifter Hwang in a brawl during a year-end dinner party, leaving Hwang with injuries that is expected to keep him hospitalized for six weeks.

The former Olympic champion was slated to compete in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro games.
