7 S. Korean Traditional Buddhist Mountain Temples Selected as UNESCO List Candidates

Seven of South Korea’s traditional Buddhist mountain temples have been selected as application candidates to UNESCO’s World Heritage list for next year.

A committee for seeking the inscription of the temples on the list said the selection was made following deliberation by the cultural properties committee under the Cultural Heritage Administration.

The seven temples belong to the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. They are the temples of Beopju, Magok, Seonam, Daeheung, Bongjeong, Buseok and Tondgo.

The temples are regarded to have outstanding universal value as living heritages.

The seven temples house 12 national treasures and 68 cultural heritages of Buddhist nature.

Currently, the Bulguk Temple is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. It was listed in 1995.

As for Buddhist cultural properties, the printing woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana and miscellaneous Buddhist scriptures were listed on the UNESCO Memory of the World list and the depositories for the woodblocks at Haein Temple were inscribed on the World Heritage list.
