Soprano Jo Su-mi Nominated for Academy Awards

Soprano Jo Su-mi has become the first South Korean to be nominated for the Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences(AMPAS) Thursday nominated “Simple Song #3,” sung by the South Korean soprano in the film “Youth,” for Best Original Song.

Jo was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award with the song on Monday but the honor went to Britain’s Sam Smith, who sang “Writing’s On The Wall,” the theme song for the latest James Bond movie “Spectre.”

"Simple Song #3” was written by U.S. composer David Lang, inspired by the music of Igor Stravinsky. In "Youth," Jo also plays herself in the movie.

The 88th Academy Awards ceremony will be held on February 28.
