The Korean Film Reporters Association picked “The Throne” as the Best Picture of 2015.
The film portrays the struggle of an 18th century king during the Joseon Dynasty who starves his son, the crown prince, to death.
“The Throne” also stars Best Actor Yoo Ah-in and Best Supporting Actress Jeon Hye-jin selected by the association.
Movie critics like Jason Bechervaise agree with the Korean Film Reporters Association, a group of 82 reporters from 50 media outlets in Korea.

"Director Lee Joon-ik is familiar with period films and brings his expertise to the genre and it has two excellent leads in the form of veteran actor Song Kang-ho and the increasingly popular Yoo Ah-in. For me, it's this pairing that is particularly effective... as it allows viewers to gain an insight into this troubled relationship between King Yeongjo and Prince Sado and the predicament the King is in fulfilling his role as King as well as a father."
The Korean Film Council's Pierce Conran however, noted that there were other noteworthy South Korean movies as well in 2015.

"Others under the radar were 'Madonna,' a brilliant film by Shin Su-won which deals with the plight of women in a very profound way and Hong Sang-soo's 'Right Now, Wrong Then,' which with its humor and relatable themes was more accessible than most of Hong's films."
"'Veteran,' one of last year's biggest films, was a breathless and hilarious crime thriller that dealt with the public's current malaise with those abusing stations of wealth and power in a clever and accessible way.
The Best Director Award went to Ryoo Seung-wan for action comedy “Veteran,” a summer box office hit in South Korea.
The Korean Film Reporters Association voted Jeon Do-yeon as Best Actress for her role in “The Shameless, 2014”. The association chose Oh Dal-su of “Assassination” as Best Supporting Actor.
The Best Foreign Language Film Award meanwhile went to “Mad Max: Fury Road”.
Awards will be given out at the Press Center in downtown Seoul next Wednesday.
