10th Anniversary Memorial Ceremony Held for Video Art Pioneer Paik Nam-june

The Nam June Paik Art Center held an event at its building located in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province on Friday to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the late video artist Paik Nam-june.

The ceremony took place at the "Utopian Laser TV Station" installed in the center's lobby, which was connected real-time to the service in Bongeun Temple in Seoul, where Paik's remains are enshrined.

Citizens gathered at the Art Center to watch a tributary performance by artist Park Seung-won, who was virtually connected from his studio. The memorial service was streamed on YouTube.

An official at the center said the video art guru had hoped to see thousands of big and small TV stations prop up through the use of high frequency of lasers. The official said the Friday ceremony relied on Paik's style of using the media to overcome physical distance through Internet connection.

The tenth anniversary events will continue at the center through Sunday.

Performances will be held during the three days and Paik's final video installation work, and there will also be a screening of a satellite broadcast entitled "Tiger is Alive."

Paik is often called “Father of Video Art,” as the man who first realized the potential for video as an artist’s medium.
