Nepal’s President Bidhya Devi Bhandari met with World Taekwondo Federation(WTF) President Choue Chung-won in Kathmandu on Thursday and shared views on advancing the Korean sport.
The WTF says during the meeting at the Nepalese Presidential office, Bhandari said that taekwondo is not just a sport but also a means of education that is greatly contributing to creating a new, disciplined generation in the country.
Bhandari, who was elected Nepal’s first female president last October, highly assessed the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation that will be launched by the WTF this month in a bid to help child refugees.
Bhandari said the serious refugee situation in Europe could soon become a problem for South Asia as well. The president said she believes the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation and the sport itself will be helpful in resolving related issues.
Choue arrived in Nepal last Friday for a week-long stay to explain the foundation's trial projects. He said he is in talks with the Nepal Taekwondo Association on how to help youths who were affected by the country's devastating earthquake last year.
The Nepalese government is planning to select one sport among taekwondo, volleyball and cricket and designate it as its national sport. The designated sport would be adopted into a mandatory class for all elementary school students in the country.
