Gov’t Aims to Secure Legal Ground for Monthly Culture Days

The Culture Ministry is seeking to secure legal grounds for the operation of the so-called Culture Day.

While announcing this year’s culture day plans Monday, the ministry said that a revision to the Framework Act on Culture was sent to the National Assembly last November. It said it will work to obtain parliamentary approval within the first half of the year.

Once passed, the revision will provide a legal basis for the designation and operation of "culture day," or the last Wednesday of each month.

With the legislation, the ministry plans to increase the number of cultural programs by 300 from the current two-thousand, while boosting the public participation rate to 40 percent.

Since January 2014, the government has designated the last Wednesday of each month as a day of culture to promote the public's access to various cultural events.
