Women's Football Team Departs to Japan for Olympic Qualifiers

The South Korean women's national football team has left for Japan to take part in the final qualification round of the Rio Olympics in Brazil this summer.

The team led by coach Yoon Duk-yeo departed Gimhae International Airport Thursday afternoon and headed for Osaka, Japan, where the qualifiers will take place.

Before departing, Yoon said his team was motivated by the fact that the men's football team has successfully qualified for eight straight Olympics.

He added that now is the time for the women's team to achieve its goal.

In the final Asian qualifying round, six countries including South and North Korea, Japan and China will play each other, with the top two teams advancing to the Olympics.

South Korea's first match with North Korea will begin at 7:35 p.m. Monday at Yanmar Stadium Nagai in Osaka.

Team Korea is looking to compete in women’s football at an Olympics for the first time in its history.
