Education Ministry to Expand Literacy Program

South Korea's Education Ministry will expand efforts to lower illiteracy rates.

Under the ministry's 2016 adult literacy expansion plans revealed Wednesday, it will produce related television programs and set up literacy education centers nationwide this year.

The Education Ministry, the National Institute for Lifelong Education and state-run broadcaster EBS will team up to produce television shows reinforcing literacy to be aired three times a week. On-site classes will be provided for those living in areas that lack education facilities.

The Education Ministry will also submit amendments to the Lifelong Education Act to legally authorize the plans.

Officials said the expanded scheme is expected to assist two-point-64 million people.
