The Korean Film Council on Thursday announced a set of measures to promote the South Korean art film industry.
The council will first introduce a screen quota system for Korean art films to ensure such movies are screened at theaters nationwide. It will adopt the system based on the existing screen quota for South Korean movies, which requires theaters to play South Korean movies 73 days a year.
Currently, large businesses dominate film production and distribution, making it difficult for art films that are lower in scale to be shown at cinemas. In addition, most of the theaters that show art movies are concentrated in the capital region, making it difficult for viewers in other regions across the nation to see such films.
The council will also introduce a theater evaluation system, which will assess cinemas in terms of how bright their screens are and their sound quality to help moviegoers choose suitable theaters.
