S. Korean Wins World Short Track Title

South Korean short track skater Choi Min-jeong secured a world title on Sunday for the second consecutive year.

At the International Skating Union(ISU) World Short Track Speed Skating Championships at the Mokdong Ice Rink in Seoul, Choi earned 66 points, earning a gold medal in the women’s one-thousand-meter race and coming in sixth at the women’s three-thousand-meter super final. Choi’s rival Marianne St-Gelais of Canada finished second with 63 points.

The 17-year-old won a silver in the female one-thousand-500-meter race on Saturday, casting doubts on her chances of winning top individual honors at the championships. She also fell after tripping over the skates of China’s Qu Chunyu in the women’s three-thousand meters.

But Choi’s gold in the one-thousand-meter event and calmness under pressure appear to have carried the day for the champion.
