Viktor Ahn to Retire after Pyeongchang Winter Olympics

Korea-born short track skater Viktor Ahn unveiled on Friday that he will retire after competing in the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

Ahn, a naturalized Russian citizen, revealed the plan after he received a “proud graduate award” from Korea National Sport University.

At the award ceremony, Ahn told reporters that he initially wanted to retire after the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. However, he said that he decided to postpone his retirement date as recommended by the head of the Russian Skating Union.

Ahn said that he is training hard for the upcoming Olympic Games, adding that he is hoping for an awe-inspiring retirement after having exerted all his might.

On his goal for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, Ahn said that he, naturally, is aiming for the gold medal. However, he was quick to add that he will not dwell on the results, saying that a gold medal cannot be won with sole ambition.
