The Korea Tourism Organization(KTO) said Wednesday that it has launched a free smartphone rental service for foreign tourists.
The service dubbed “Enjoy Mobile Korea,” selects 250 people at random every week among those who apply online for the free phone at emk.visitkorea.or.kr.
According to the KTO, about two-thousand-500 tourists applied just in the first week alone between March 15th and the 20th.
The majority, or 41 percent of the applicants, was from Hong Kong, followed by visitors from Taiwan, Malaysia and China.
By age, those in their 20s and 30s made up a solid 73 percent of the applicants, while female applicants outnumbered males.
Foreigners are permitted to use up to one gigabyte of mobile data per day and make free domestic calls for a maximum five-day rental period.
The free smartphones can be picked up and returned at the SK Telecom Roaming Center at Incheon International Airport.
