The government will provide a total of seven million U.S. dollars in aid to Iraq where a humanitarian crisis is rapidly worsening due to Islamic State militants.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday that the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Iraq grew sharply from five-point-two million in January 2015 to eleven million in January this year.

The ministry said the number of displaced people in Iraq stands at three-point-two million, adding that some three-and-a-half million people reside in regions besieged by militants.

The government will provide three million dollars of the aid via the Funding Facility for Immediate Stabilization and the remaining four million dollars via international organizations that are carrying out humanitarian work in Iraq, such as the World Food Programme, World Health Organization, UNHCR and UNICEF.
